Sample Physical Education Standards-Based Assessments

The process involves the following:

Step 1 Identify the standard noting the verb, type of verb, and skill, activity, or content.
Step 2 Choose the assessment tool or tools that best allow students to demonstrate their achievement relative to the standard.
Step 3 State the criteria for competence.
Step 4 Describe the levels of quality.
Step 5 Develop samples of student work that illustrate each level of quality.

Standard 1

This example is for the standard: Demonstrate the mature technique for catching.

1. Identify the standard

Demonstrate the mature technique for catching.

2. Choose the Assessment Tool:

Structured Observation: Catching practice

3. State criteria for competence

Grasp the ball with both hands.
Give with the ball on contact.

4. Describe levels of quality

6 - Mature technique for catching in a game setting.

5 - Mature technique for catching a variety of throws.

3 - Intermediate stage of catching:

Prepares for catch by lifting arms, bending arms slightly, attempting to contact with hands first and using the chest as a backstop.

2 - Initial stage of catching:

Makes an anticipatory movement, holds arms in front of body, elbows extended and palms up, bends arms at elbows, cradles ball.

1 - Random attempts to catch:

Attempts to trap the ball.

 

Standard 2

This example is for the standard: Analyzes motor skill performances using biomechanic principles.

2. Choose the assessment tool: Project

In groups of four, students select the sport skill that they would like to analyze. Next each student in the group is videotaped performing the skill. Then, group members assess each other's performances using all of the basic biomechanic principles. Finally, the group provides each member with recommendations for improving their skill.

3. State criteria for competence

Accurately assesses each student's performance.

Correctly identifies the biomechanic principle(s) followed or violated.

4. Describe levels of quality.

6 Meets Level 4 and provides two or more recommendations for skill improvement.

5 Meets Level 4 and provides one recommendation for skill improvement.

4 Accurately assesses each performance and correctly identifies the biomechanic principles.

Standard 3a
